Frequently asked questions

Why do I need mortgage advice?

Getting a mortgage is likely to be one of the biggest financial decisions you'll ever make, and it's important you make a choice that suits your circumstances. A mortgage adviser can search the market on your behalf and recommend the right deal for you.

How do I apply for a mortgage?

The process involves providing lots of information to lenders (and filling out a whole lot of forms). Being well prepared is key and can make the process move smoothly. For more guidance, check out our comprehensive guide.

How do I get a mortgage if I'm self-employed?

Being self-employed doesn't mean you can't get a mortgage. Ensuring your books are all up-to-date and keeping a clear record of your finances can help strengthen your position as a borrower. In this case, we'd recommend speaking with a mortgage adviser to find out what you need to do.

What is remortgaging?

Remortgaging is the process of taking out a new loan to cover your previous mortgage. Remortgaging can come with plenty of benefits, from releasing equity in your home to the potential to save money on your monthly repayments. Check out our remortgaging guide for more information.

What is protection?

Protection secures your family and home against the worst-case scenario. It's also important to note that your needs are likely to change throughout your life. Perhaps you're moving jobs, starting a family, or even downsizing. These are all things you need to consider when looking at protection.

Do I need to have a Will in place to get a mortgage?

No, having a Will in place is not a requirement for getting approved for a mortgage.

However, having a Will is generally recommended for everyone regardless of their mortgage situation. It ensures your wishes for your estate are carried out after you pass away, which can avoid complications for your loved ones during an already difficult time.

Lee was extremely helpful during the mortgage process and was able to answer all my questions without any delay. As a first time buyer he didn’t make me feel like my questions were silly and always provided lots of advice. I would definitely recommend Lee to others!

I've had such a pleasant experience with Mortgage Advice Bureau so far, and I would highly recommend their services. In particular, I've had a wonderful experience with Wesley Bunseedhun, who has been clear, informative and friendly in all our interactions. I can't believe that (in my case) this has been a free of charge service. Wesley has gone above and beyond to find a mortgage for me (which was not straightforward given a previous debt management plan on my record), and has been helpful far beyond - even writing a letter of recommendation when it came to submitting a sealed bid for the home I fell in love with. Wesley has been a real champion throughout the process, and its been very reassuring as a first time buyer to have his guidance. He's talked me through mortgage repayment options (inc fixed and variable), looked at affordability of monthly repayments, explained other things i'll need such as buildings, contents and life insurance, and advised on process at every step of the way. Moreover, he's been super communicative and has responded quickly to emails and kept me in the loop regularly via phone too - including a personal call to let me know my mortgage offer had gone through. As I get closer to getting the keys to my first home, I can't thank Wesley enough for getting me to this point, and I am also grateful to Kate Gregory - my case handler - who is helping me liaise with solicitors and the mortgage provider, etc, and who has been similarly helpful and professional in her communications so far. In summary, I wouldn't hesitate to contact MAB for your mortgage enquiries. When I was first in touch with them, I was not at all convinced i'd be able to buy my own home, and just 8 weeks from first contacting them (via my ISA provider, Nottingham Building Society), I've been offered a mortgage offer that suits my personal circumstances and found a home that I can't wait to move into. Thank you!
